Children's Health & Fitness ? Obesity Is (Bad) Habit Forming

Rising rates of childhood obesity pose a serious public health problem. Excess weight increases the risk of several chronic diseases, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

As children are being diagnosed with these ?adult? illnesses early in life, how healthy can we expect them to be as they get older?

Solving the obesity problem is a complex issue; however, researchers from University of California-San Diego and the University of Minnesota recently uncovered some important advice for parents. Obese youngsters are far more successful at losing weight if their parents get in shape with them.

In the study, researchers looked at 80 sets of parents with overweight kids ages 8 to 12. Numerous factors were studied, including parenting style and changes in the food environment at home.

What they found is that the single best predictor of children?s weight loss is the parents? weight loss. The best thing parents can do to help their obese children lose weight is to lose weight themselves.
