Back To School HP Deals At Walmart ? With Walmart GC Giveaway ...

September, 1948 I enter school. For the next 16 years I am a full time student and getting books and school supplies is a ritual. September 1970, my firstborn enters school. The ritual begins again without pause until June 2004 when my youngest graduates high school. Wouldn?t you think with four children that I?ve had enough shopping for back to school supplies? It doesn?t work that way. Please remember:
#1, I have hubby for which to shop.
#2, I am a grammy of seven.

News Flash! Times are tough, and the U. S. is in a bad economy. I try to shop wisely and stretch every dollar. Hubby?s five year old laptop isn?t working properly. Grandson #1?s three year old laptop isn?t working at all. With technology what it is for computers today, I have to consider replacing rather than repairing. So, I?m off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard who stocks everything at great prices. Time to check out Walmart for HP?s Back-to-School Technology. No need to break the piggy bank. Computer prices continue to fall as with new features are built in. Besides, if I don?t buy now then there is always Christmas.

Buying my youngest a HP laptop when he entered the service September, 2004, was one of the smartest things I ever did. His emails and pictures helped a lot. Laptops eight years later are even better ? smaller, smarter, and speedier. Today?s world is built on computers. Wish the HP Pavilion dv6-7029wm Entertainment PC had been around back then.

Jabra Solemate Bluetooth speaker hands-on, soles off

Hey, it's a shoe-themed Bluetooth speaker -- because, hey, why not, right? Jabra announced the punnily named Solemate yesterday, and we happened to run into one on the floor of this year's IFA. It's a small, solid little speaker with a hearty rubber sole that sits on the bottom, protecting the device from shocks and the like. The heel actually peels off, so you can replace it with different colors. Jabra had a slew of brightly colored options aside from the basic black and white, though apparently those won't be widely available at launch.

The pairing process is quite easy -- just flip the Bluetooth button on the side of the device and a glowing blue light will turn on -- not only that, but a friendly device will walk you through the process. Find the speaker on your device's drop down menu and you're good to go. As for the sound, it's surprisingly loud (120dB, to be exact). We walked off the show floor for a second to demo it, but it turned out we didn't need to. Oh, and when you're using a non-Bluetooth device, there's a wired connection that lives on the bottom of the sole that you can pull out.

All in all, it's a really solid and nicely built speaker -- and for its $200 asking price, we'd certainly hope so. The speaker has big volume buttons on the top and a carrying loop on its side. It also comes with a small black bag, which it can actually play through without dampening the sound too much. It'll hit the US on September 2nd, but you can pre-order it now, if you're eager.

Too early to tell if hurricane will affect crops, costs - NRA News Blog

It's been a wild ride for food producers as drought affected corn and soybean crops this summer and then a tropical storm-turned-hurricane hit the Gulf Coast this week.

The latest weather event could potentially cause damage to sugar and rice crops in Louisiana and Mississippi, but it is still too early to tell.

Isaac, a Category 1 hurricane, hit the Panhandle Aug. 28, the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. More than 18 inches of precipitation has fallen on some areas, combined with winds of at least 75 miles per hour, causing flooding, evacuations and business closings.

Commodities consultant John Barone, founder and CEO of MarketVision Inc. in Fairfield, N.J., said it is too soon to tell if there is crop damage in the region or how extensive it could be.

"It depends on where the storm goes," he said. "The first crops affected in Louisiana and Mississippi areas could be sugar and rice. The real effect now is from the shutdown of Gulf Coast oil refineries that occurred ahead of the storm. Those closings have resulted in yet another uptick in gas prices."

A U.S. Department of Agriculture report said more than one quarter of the sugar-cane crop in Louisiana had been planted by Aug. 19.

Barone said that if the hurricane does damage the rice and sugar crops, it could eventually mean even higher food costs for restaurateurs and other foodservice operators.

Rising food costs have plagued restaurant and foodservice operators for some time now. Before Isaac, the drought this summer damaged more than half of the U.S. corn supply. That caused an increase in feed prices, which has led to a slowdown in the production of poultry, pork, beef and dairy products.

But the USDA, in an Aug. 27 blog post, stated that the rainfall could bring some good news.

According to the blog, any moisture that Isaac produces in drought-affected areas of the mid-South and lower Midwest could "help revive pastures and boost soil moisture reserves in preparation for winter ... planting."

Barone agreed with the assessment, saying the rainfall is "likely to add needed subsoil moisture for winter wheat."

Home Improvement Tips For Success | Contacts Manufacturer ...

Once you?ve tried every possible method imaginable to rid yourself of a squeaky door, if it still persists, it might be time for a new door hinge. They can be found at any hardware store. Simply disassemble the hinge and attach each side of it to the door and wall frame. Then align the hinge parts and replace the pins.

Upgrade your thermostat to a programmable model designed to regulate temperature based on occupancy to make a comfortable improvement to your home. These easy to install thermometers allow you to set the temperature differently throughout the day based on preference and occupancy. For example, you can reduce the heat during the day when the home is empty or outside temperatures increase.

Over the last several years, compost piles in backyards have become much more common. Not only are they a home improvement tool, they are effective at creating fertilizer for your garden, and can also teach you and your children to be more sustainable and conscious of how you use products and dispose of them.

Give your bathroom an unique touch by deciding on a theme. Most people spend hours in their bathrooms, but apart from the coordinated colors, nothing seems to be unique. Come up with fun themes like pirate, under the sea, at the beach, or shipwrecked. Finding accessories for your idea can be fun and give your bathroom a sense of personality.

Add some elegance to your dining table while utilizing empty votive candle holders. Place toothpicks into the empty candle holders and place them on a fancy tray. Set them on your dining room table to add a chic touch to your environment. This set up can also look great outside in your garden during summertime.

Glue your wallboard in place before nailing it! A caulking gun and the right adhesive makes quick work of the job. The advantages of quicker installation are obvious. Another advantage is fewer nails. Furthermore, the glue holds the wall board tightly in place and the nails you do use are less likely to pop out in the future.

Make sure you are aware of the amount of debris that results from your remodeling project, and ensure you have enough space for it. Any project that requires removing existing fixtures or building materials creates a lot of debris. When you know where you are going to store it and how you are going to get rid of it, you prevent running into a situation where you do not have enough space or funds set aside to cover the cost of debris removal.

Try to replace your exterior light fixtures. Consider the style of the light fixtures and their function. You need them to be able to bright enough to light up your entryway and to make it safer. Try looking for fixtures that have the same mounting system as your current ones so you can save time on the project.

If you do run into complications when trying to remodel a section of your house alone ask for help. There is no shame in asking for help when you come across an obstacle. A home that is properly remodeled looks better than a home that was remodeled poorly and not done properly.

One of the best home improvements you can do when selling your home is to replace the old and worn-out carpets. This will make the property look nice and give a great impression on potential buyers. Buyers quickly get turned off if they think that they are going to have to replace the stained and tattered carpets in every room.

Before buying any materials for a home improvement job, you should go online and comparison shop at the local home improvement store websites. This is a great way for you to be certain that you are getting the materials at the best price that you can rather than overpaying and wasting your money.

Keep your home smelling scented and fresh by making your own potpourri sachets. Buy some little jewelry organza bags and fill them with store bought potpourri. To boost the scent, pour some aromatherapy oils on top. Display them in different areas of your home to create a nice and scented environment.

Make each room in your home look expensive by adding one high-end piece of furniture. Each room needs a focal point; otherwise, everything just blurs together and the room has no sparkle. Choose one special piece of furniture; a great armoire, a trompe l?oleil chest, an oversize mirror with an ornate frame or something else special and unique to dress up each room. Your friends will think you?ve hired a designer.

Avoid hiring an architect for minor home improvements and small renovations. Check your local building codes; in most areas architects are unnecessary for jobs below a certain size. Working with a competent contractor on these small-scale projects makes an architect unnecessary. When an architect is unnecessary and not required by local ordinances, save yourself some money by working without one.

When painting trim in your home, choose a semi-gloss or high-gloss paint, especially in areas that see a lot of traffic. People naturally touch door frames and trims, and glossy paints are much easier to wipe clean than flat paints. As a bonus, using high-gloss trim paints will provide some contrast to flatter wall colors.

If you are buying tools and equipment for a home improvement project, don?t cheap out on the essentials. For example, a cheaply-built ladder will often fall apart while being used and low-quality paintbrushes may shed bristles into the paint, leaving ugly marks on the walls. Aim for middle-grade equipment if you are on a budget, otherwise, you may be in for some nasty accidents.

If your home is looking a bit drab, you should try these various tips to liven up your home. There are hundreds of tips here that are designed to help you get your home looking fabulous. If you apply these tips today. your home will be looking better in no time.

Day Trading The Emini ? Training Ground For Big Contracts ...

In 1997 the Chicago Mercantile Exchange created a new financial instrument known as the emini futures contract. It started off small but now is a fully mature market with excellent liquidity.

Now in 2005, the emini futures contract is an investment vehicle of choice, for beginning and experienced futures traders the world over.

In this introductory article, I just want to have a look at why that is. You see for an investment vehicle to gain wide appeal it has to have a few characteristics.

It needs to be accessible to a wide public. The emini is such a vehicle. The minimum you need is around $500 to get started, instead of $5000 or more with regular futures.

It needs to be liquid, in other words there must be enough buyers to buy when you want to sell and sellers to sell when you want to buy.

The emini is very liquid.

There needs to be a significant profit. The structure of a well traded account is such that with a small amount of start-up capital very significant profits can be made, enough actually to trade for a living.

The taxation situation is very advantageous, in many jurisdictions only being capital gains tax ? you should always check with a professional before making an investment decision.

The lifestyle of a successful emini futures trader can be very comfortable, an hour or so of trading in the morning and that?s it for the day. It?s possible to make $500 or $1000 in an hour or so depending upon how many contracts you trade. It?s also possible to lose just as much, which is my obligatory sobering statement to any gamblers out there.

It?s this lifestyle that gives it such appeal to people like you and me.

Freedom from the man
Working from home
Spending more time with the family

But that is the positive. On the dark side, with futures and emini futures there is financial risk, so this is not something that one goes into untrained.

That would merely be gambling. Successful investing, is not so much about being right or wrong or the roll of the dice, but about money management, patience and discipline to following a system. If you are a gambler then stay away from futures, for you will surely lose and can lose big.

If you are willing to learn and trade a system, and utilise money management principles then you can join the ranks of an group of successful traders are making significant profits from home.

Review: Rock Band Blitz (XBLA, PSN) - Better Gaming Bureau

Does the latest Music game revitalize a fading genre, or does it put the final nail in the coffin?

I need to be honest here. As much as it pains me to say it, the Music Game genre is on life support, being kept alive only by the odd night of drunken plastic guitar debauchery that still breaks out at parties from time to time. Even I, one of the most consistent Rock Band players of years past, have to wipe some dust off of my peripherals when I feel like belting out some Miranda Cosgrove these days. But that won?t stop Harmonix from trying to capitalize on the foundation they started building 10 years ago, and we should all be thankful for that.

Rock Band Blitz is Harmonix?s way of changing up the formula a little bit by harkening back to their roots. Much like their past games, Frequency and Amplitude, Rock Band Blitz gets rid of the plastic instruments in favor of the good old fashioned controller, which you will use to navigate the guitar, bass, drum, vocal, and keyboard tracks, playing notes on each one the whole way through a song. Unlike its big brother, Rock Band Blitz is more like the 3DS and PSP versions of the franchise in that, throughout a song, you will switch from highway to highway playing notes on every instrument rather than being stuck to rocking out just one at a time.

The task of juggling every instrument at once seems daunting at first, especially for those who could barely play the regular Rock Band games at the Easy level, but Rock Band Blitz simplifies things to make it accessible and fun for everyone. Instead of playing 5 notes on any given highway, you are only responsible for 2 notes that you play by flicking the left stick and right stick in unison with the little rectangles on the screen. (Note: there?s a bunch of other control schemes to choose from).

Now, for Plastic Guitar Warriors such as myself, having to pay attention to only two notes may seem like being on Easy street when it comes to getting massive note streaks. But even without the instrument in your hand and facing simplified highways, Rock Band Blitz still makes you feel like the shreddingest of rock stars at times as you flip through instruments and hit note after note with ever-growing ease the more you play the game. The amount of fun it is to play notes in unison with a song you love is not lost at all in Rock Band Blitz, and the euphoria that comes with nailing sections of any particular track is still there in droves. Believe me, the gameplay does not disappoint in the least bit.

What helps a ton with this is the fact that the beauty of Rock Band Blitz lies in that, unlike Rock Band 3, it isn?t about how many notes you hit in a row, its about when you hit the notes and how you hit them. It?s about using different strategies and getting to the highest point on the leaderboard amongst your friends as possible.

The scoring system of Rock Band Blitz is completely new and overly addicting. While hitting as many notes in a row as you could was the crux of Rock Band 3?s scoring system, Rock Band Blitz doesn?t care about note streaks at all. It doesn?t even care about you missing notes because you can?t fail at all. Instead, every note you hit on a particular instrument highway builds up a persistent multiplier on that highway which remains whether you miss a note or blast through all of them effortlessly. The real quirk in the gameplay comes in the fact that each instrument track can only be raised to a set multiplier level in any given section of a song, and you can?t raise it any more until you reach a checkpoint in the song which raises the multiplier level caps for all of the instrument tracks depending on where the lowest multiplier out of the 5 tracks lies. The higher the multiplier you have on each track at the end, the bigger the final bonus you get on your score when the roadies are packing up the truck.

This leaves you with some rocking decisions to make at any given time. Do you want to go on farming points on the keyboard track that is throwing notes at you and is at the 10x multiplier, or do you focus on raising that barren vocal track?s multiplier from 8x to 10x so that your cap will be raised higher at the next checkpoint? Whatever you choose to do will effect your score at the end. ?Paparazzi? by Lady Gaga is a whole different beast from ?Through the Fire and Flames? by Dragonforce in the way you play each song, and you need to master the tracks and patterns of every song if you ever want your score to be respectable. Add in a layer of Power-Ups to the gameplay and you have something special.

Not only do you have to juggle playing more instruments than a member of Rush, but there?s also a plethora of upgrades to choose from in order to help your scoring pursuits as well. In Rock Band Blitz, each song you complete gives you both Blitz Cred and coins. Blitz Cred is the game?s XP system, ad reaching certain level of BZ unlocks Power-ups to buy before playing a song. You buy these upgrades with the coins you earn, and each upgrade can only be bought for one song and one song only. One Powerup might double the multiplier on a given track for a short amount of time, while another may cause a track to catch fire for bonus points. There?s around 15 in total split between 3 categories, and choosing the right ones to use for a particular song will be the key to getting the stars you need. But if you choose the wrong power ups and score poorly, that?s tough crap for you because the points are spent and cannot be refunded. If you fail to defeat a foe with a particular set of upgrades, you have to go and play a few other songs in order to gain enough coins to purchase some new upgrades and try again.

The system can be extremely entertaining and sometimes frustrating, but always remains addictive thanks in large part to the way it handles giving you a challenge. There is no active multiplayer, but through Facebook and the game itself, Rock Band Blitz always keeps tabs on who?s better than you or who?s challenging you for each song. Even before you pick a song, there?s a constant score list so that you are always aware of your next target on the leaderboard. I found myself always playing songs to gain more money to try one last crack at that bastard who I couldn?t catch up to on Rush?s YYZ. Now, not everyone is interested in playing a song repeatedly and going for high scores. For the more casual player, this aspect of the game will not have a lasting appeal at all. But if you are a score seeker, the game keeps you playing over and over again by dangling that delicious carrot in your face and never letting you quite catch up to it because there is always someone who is better than you. But you will keep trying over and over and over again gladly because the musical experience is worth it and the gameplay is solid.

Rock Band Blitz comes with 25 songs in the game itself. The artists range anywhere from Foster the People to Pink to the Foo Fighters and everything in between. While the standard tracklist is diverse enough to be enjoyable for most, Rock Band Blitz?s real success comes in its ability to take every DLC track you?ve downloaded and exported in the regular Rock Band series and effortlessly port them into this new game. For Rock Band veterans, you will have thousands of songs ready to go right off the bat. For newbies to the Harmonix series, there is a world of music at your fingertips just ready to be bought and played. Additionally, each song that comes with Rock Band Blitz can be exported free of charge and played in Rock Band 3 if you still prefer putting your palm sweat all over those fake guitars.

The only thing I really missed from Rock Band 3 which didn?t make it over to its Arcade counterpart were the visuals that went along with every song in that game. Watching my fictional band headbang away to Men at Work was always something that I got a kick out of. Unfortunately in Rock Band Blitz, the band is replaced by a generic roadway that races through an unnamed city from the beginning to the end of the song. That isn?t to say that the game looks bad, though. Its still quite colorful, but the visual appeal is definitely lacking in comparison to the bigger installments. Even so, its a minor gripe for a great game.

For those who never played the likes of Amplitude or even Rock Band: Unplugged, Rock Band Blitz is sure to be a little jarring to the thought of what music games are and should be. It may even be a little awkward to play at first. But give it a couple of songs and you will be right back into the groove of things and enjoying the hell out of it. Rock Band Blitz takes an old formula and revitalizes it into a music game that is less focused on the music, but will still keep you coming back for more just the same. Any fan of the genre or the music, or hell, even someone just looking for a good challenge should give it a go. For those who are not into going for the high score at any cost, the game will, admittedly, lose your interest in the long run. But for those of you who are up for the task, Rock Band Blitz will give you unrelenting enjoyment for a long time to come.

First Test: Ashwin spins India to innings victory (Roundup)

Hyderabad, Aug 26

Off-spinner Ravichandra Ashwin ended with match figures of 12 for 85 as Indian won the first cricket test against New Zealand by an innings and 115 runs on the fourth day at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium at Uppal here Sunday.

The visitors were all out for 164 runs in the second innings after India had enforced the follow-on. The Kiwis had scored 159 in the first innings in reply to India's 438.

Man-of-the-Match Ashwin took a dozen wickets in 43.2 overs, the best match figures by an Indian bowler against New Zealand. He had picked up six for 31 in the first innings. The other Indian spinner, Pragyan Ojha, claimed six wickets for 92 in the match.

The Kiwis collapsed like proverbial ninepins as they lost nine wickets for 66 runs on the penultimate day of the rain-hit match. The Indian spinners dominated the show after a fine 159 by Cheteshwar Pujara had helped India amass a 400-plus total in the first two days.

It took just seven overs for India after the tea break to seal the victory and go one up in the two-match series. The Black Caps, who were at one stage fighting well at 98 for one were reduced to 146 for six at tea and lost the remaining wickets for the addition of another 18 runs after the break.

Resuming at their overnight 41 for one, after play was delayed by two hours due to rain, Brendon McCullum (42) and Kane Williamson (52) looked set for a big score. Playing defiantly against the Indian spinners, they denied the hosts any breakthrough till lunch. The score was then 92 for one.

The first breakthrough of the day for India came in the third over after lunch but in a rather controversial manner. McCullum was adjudged leg before to Umesh Yadav when an inside edge seemed to have hit the pad as he tried to defend. With no DRS, the Kiwi opener had no option but to walk back to the pavilion. He was furious, shaking his head repeatedly and tossing the bat from one hand to the other as he walked towards the dressing room.

McCullum and Williamson resumed well in the morning and denied any breakthrough to India in the first session. For the first time, the Kiwi batsmen showed some character against Indian spinners and executed their game plan well.

However, in the post-lunch session, the hosts turned the tables on Black Caps with the fall of McCullum. Skipper Ross Taylor (7) failed yet again as he was deceived by a Ashwin delivery, which sharply came in hitting the stumps. The lost of two wickets in quick succession shortly after lunch brought the pressure back on the visitors.

Williamson along with Flynn then tried to steer the inning. The two added 33 runs for the fourth wicket before Ojha struck again to remove Williamson. A thick outside edge landed safely into the hands of Virender Sehwag at the first slip, bringing an end to Williamson's inning. He was the most successful batsman for the New Zeland scoring 52 off 163 balls with four hits to the fence.

Ashwin dealt another blow when he trapped Daniel Flynn (11) in front of the stumps. The Kiwis slumped to 142 for five and Indian camp was already sensing victory.

James Franklin (5), who was the top scorer for the Kiwis in the first innings with an unbeaten 43, did not last long. Sehwag at the first slip dived to his right and took a sensational one-hand catch after wicket keeper Dhoni was also beaten by a ball which bounced and was sharply drifting away. It was a beauty from Ashwin, who claimed the ninth wicket of the match.

After denying Indian bowlers any success in the morning session, New Zealand lost five wickets with the addition of 54 runs between lunch and tea.

The worst was yet to come for them. There was no change of fortunes after the tea as Indian spinners tightened their grip on the tail-enders. Competing with his spin partner at the other end, Ojha dismissed Doug Bracewell (1) in the second over after tea.

Ashwin claimed 10th wicket when he had Kruger Van Wyk (13) leg before the wicket. The Kiwi wicket keeper batsman attempted a sweep shot but found himself trapped before the stumps.

The spinner completed the formalities in his next over. Boult had no clue to a ball which spun, took an outside edge and once again Sehwag took a low catch at the first slip. This was his third catch of the day.

Two balls later, Ashwin trapped Chris Martin in front of the stumps to give India their first victory after the defeat in eight tests. Ashwin also completed his second six wicket haul of the match and a holiday crowd of over 20,000 erupted in joy.

Two new terms needed in the management of advanced prostate ...

Posted on by Sitemaster

It is rapidly becoming apparent that we are going to need two simple, new terms to be able to use in discussion of the evolution of progressive prostate cancer after ?standard? forms of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) have failed to work. So ? anyone got some good suggestions?

In the first place, the term, ?castration-resistant prostate cancer? is clearly no longer accurate (whether it was ever a good term or not). This term was coined, not so long ago, to describe men who had progressive disease after treatment with:

  • ?Standard? ADT, meaning?bilateral orchiectomy (surgical castration) or single-agent, continuous LHRH agonist therapy or continuous LHRH + antiandrogen therapy or almost any form of intermittent ADT and
  • Continous use of LHRH + antiandrogen therapy in any man who had?stopped responding to?single-agent LHRH therapy or any form of intermittent ADT and
  • Subsequent antiandrogen withdrawal

However, it is now clear that such men are not necessarily ?castration resistant? (i.e., unresponsive to hormonal therapies) because many of them clearly still respond to therapy with the new hormonally active agents like abiraterone acetate and enzalutamide. We need a new term to describe this set of men (who are still naive to drugs like abiraterone acetate and enzalutamide). Other terms that have been use to describe this condition in the past (regardless of whether the patients had metastatic disease or not) include ?hormone refractory prostate cancer? (HRPC) and ?androgen-independent prostate cancer? (AIPC). Neither of these terms is going to be appropriate either.

The other set of patients who are going to need to be defined are those men who have progressive disease after all known forms of hormonal manipulation, including all those described above as well as men progressing after treatment with drugs like

  • Ketoconazole and itraconazole
  • Low-dose estrogens
  • Abiraterone acetate
  • Enzalutamide

It may be that we should resusciate the term ?hormone refractory? to imply this set of patients, but there may be better terms. As just one example, the hormonal axis on which all hormonal therapy for prostate cancer is based is the so-called ?hypothalamic?pituitary?adrenal? (HPA) axis. If a patient becomes refractory to all attempts to manipulate the functions of that axis, perhaps we should define their condition?as ?HPA axis therapy resistant? or ?HPA axis therapy refractory? prostate cancer (HTRPC?).

Anyway ? now?s your chance to get creative!

Emeralds and diamonds and pearls, oh my! - Shopping Blog ...

14k emerald diamond ring, pearl rings with sapphires

Having different types of jewelry is always fun to have because you?ll almost never have to wear the same thing twice. And though I am a hardcore diamond person at heart, it can be a little monotonous at times. I love classic, evergreen pieces, but sometimes you need to add a bit of color to the diamond to make it more interesting.

Now the beauty of diamonds is that they are like your LBD. They never go out of style and can be paired with almost anything. For instance, you can opt for a 14k emerald diamond ring, which is both affordable and stylish. Green is one of my favorite colors and goes well with my wardrobe, but you can always pick gemstones that you adore or even as per your birth sign.

I go this heart shaped diamond and gold ring recently, which I simply hate to take off. I can wear this to work, for formal occasions and almost anywhere. You can also opt for multiple stones with it, so when you get bored, you can always opt for another color and voila, a new ring is instantly ready!

When you don?t feel like wearing green, opt for pearl rings with sapphires. Pearls are also timeless pieces that look wow with diamonds. Of course, with another stone embedded, you get a beautiful blend of colors. Check out this sterling silver freshwater cultured pearl and sapphire ring.

This radiant ring features a freshwater cultured pearl and round-cut sapphire stones that illuminate the sterling silver ring. You can pair this ring with a new pendant for a perfectly polished look. It is a very handy piece to gift someone too.

And I think both sapphire and emeralds can be worn together, if you have the right dress or accessories to complement both colors! As a rule of thumb, do sport them in different hands though to avoid overdoing the look.

Regarding separate iPhone 5 and iPad mini events

Regarding separate iPhone 5 and iPad mini events

John Gruber of Daring Fireball wrote yesterday that he thinks it's unlikely Apple will introduce both the iPhone 5 and iPad mini at the same event, rumored to be taking place on September 12.

I?m thinking it makes more sense for Apple to hold two events. First, an iPhone event, focused solely on the new iPhone and iOS 6. Then, the iPhone ships nine days later, and there?s another wave of iPhone-focused attention as the reviews come out. Then, in the first or second week of October, Apple holds its traditional ?music event?, exactly along the lines of the events at which they?ve been debuting new iPods for the last decade. (Maybe more of an ?iTunes event? than just ?music event?, given the rise of other media like TV shows, movies, and books.1)

Jim Dalrymple of The Loop clearly thinks Gruber's on to something. Both Gruber and Dalrymple have helped set the standard for Apple reporting, and have incredibly good track records, so if they even hint at it, I'm going to look into it.

iMore first learned that Apple was going ahead with the iPad mini product back in May, that it would use the iPad interface, and that they were targeting a $200-$250 price point and October launch window. At the end of July, iMore learned that Apple was planning to hold an event on September 12, and that Apple would use that event to announce both the iPhone 5 and iPad mini. Earlier this month, alongside Seth Weintraub of 9to5Mac and Gruber, we reported on what the iPad mini will look and feel like.

But would Apple want it to share the stage with the iPhone 5, or vice versa?

The original iPhone announcement at Macworld 2007 shared the stage with a rehashed announcement for the original Apple TV. The iPhone 3G announcement at WWDC 2008 shared the stage with Snow Leopard and Mobile Me. The iPhone 3GS announcement at WWDC 2009 shared the stage with new MacBook Pros. The iPhone 4 announcement at WWDC 2010, however, didn't share the stage at all. The iPhone 4S announcement didn't even take place at WWDC -- it bumped the annual fall iTunes and iPod event and was given the important pre-holiday spotlight.

Whether there was an issue with Verizon, something to do with iOS 5, iCloud, and/or Siri timelines, or some confluence of reasons, Apple moved what had been a September event to October. And, rather than hold two fall events as Apple had sometimes done with the Mac, Apple held only a single event. They did, however, tack nominal iPod updates onto the iPhone 4S announcement.

So if Apple wanted to hold one event again in the fall of 2012, and they were ready to go in September, and they wanted to hit the market with the full shock and awe of not only an entirely updated iOS device lineup, but an entirely new iOS device -- of an Apple at the height of its powers -- then they certainly could do so. They could blot out the sun on anyone else's fall announcements. And they could arguably get the best of both worlds with a unified introduction followed by a staged rollout, with reviews and new iPhones appearing on September 21, and reviews and the iPad mini appearing in October as scheduled.

But Gruber's argument makes a lot of sense. Both are incredibly important announcements and products for Apple. New iPhones, to date, have sold as much as every previous generation iPhone combined. The iPhone alone makes more money than all of Microsoft. The iPad mini is meant to one day sell in the hundreds of millions as well. It's the future of mainstream computing.

Here's the thing though -- not only hasn't Apple announced an iPhone 5 or iPad mini yet, they haven't announced an iPhone 5 or iPad mini (or iPod) event or events. There's a reason for that. There's a reason Apple waits until the last possible minute to announce anything.

Secrecy is pure upside for Apple. It helps with marketing and competition, but most importantly, it allows them to be tremendously flexible. They can choose which iPhone prototype they're going with mere months before launch, they can choose to pull cameras from iPods right before they're announced, and they can choose between having one event and two events literally up until the minute they finish prepping the first event.

Given what happened when September 12 became rumored, and everyone from Microsoft/Nokia to Verizon/Motorola to Amazon rushed to schedule pre-emptive events, it's hard to argue the value of the strategy.

As of May, 2012, iMore heard Apple was planning the iPad mini for October. As of July, 2012, we heard the announcement had been moved up to the iPhone event rumored for September 12. It may well have been moved back to October, or it may still be in flux, with Apple watching the market and weighing their options.

We'll find out soon.

The Lover's Reversed! My Thoughts on Divorce and Problems in ...

Reading in Short: Problems with ego plus disharmony and imbalance yields the end of cycle. Something in this relationship has got to give!

Divorce can often times be a tricky subject. Most major religions teach against divorce, and some religious communities can be very strict and unyielding in their stance on the matter. In my last parish we had an Amish woman who was divorced. Even though her husband was a drunk and known to be abusive, her particular community held to the ?till death do you part? rules of the wedding vows and shunned her. She left that community and stayed in our extended ecumenical family for a time until she was ready to move on again. She paid a high price for doing what she felt was best, and is a good illustration of the problems some people face when considering the possibility of divorce; namely the social and religious stigma which is still associated with it in some societies.

My views on divorce are formed by my family background and understandings of various Scriptures. I was born and raised in a moderate Roman Catholic family. My father married my mother a few years before I was born. Since my mother was divorced and strict Church doctrine taught against divorce and re-marriage, my parents chose to get married in a civil ceremony outside of the Church, much to the dis-satisfaction of the family. Still my parents continued to go to weekly Mass, even though they were being denied the Sacraments on account of living in a union which was not officially recognized as legitimate by Rome. It took several years, but my parents did go successfully through a process called annulment which ?cleared? their way to an official Church marriage and brought them back into union with their local faith community. I was 6 years old when this process came to its conclusion after 12 long years of work on their part, and was one of the members in attendance at their final ?Church approved? wedding. Since I was technically born outside of this wedding (civil weddings not being recognized by Rome) I am still classified a ?bastard? in the eyes of the Official Church.

All this served to teach me that while having rules and regulations can serve a good, these rules and regulations have got to be ones that people can live with. Jesus once asked the question ?Was the Sabbath made for man, or was man made for the Sabbath?? There are times when human needs and necessity call us to go above and beyond the doctrines of men and accept people (as Jesus did) right where they are. Yes the ?till death do you part? teaching is important, but it should never be taken as meaning ?until you are killed in an act of domestic violence.? Not all unions are entered into for sound reasons, and not all will work out in a manner that is good and healthy for all parties involved. Sometimes it becomes necessary to severe those bonds so that a greater good can be achieved, and severing those bonds is never an easy call, social and religious stigmas aside.

The cards above represent a union which is on the rocks in more ways than one, and the end is in sight. The Devil stands for problems with ego and speaks to possible addiction and addictive behaviors. In the context of this reading The Devil reflects unhealthy behaviors on the part of one or both people involved in this relationship. The Lovers reversed stands for dis-harmony and imbalance; an up-side-down marriage one might say. The last card, the Ten of Swords, reflects that the end has come for this union, at least for this union in its present state. Clearly something has got to give; either a divorce is in the making, or both parties have got to work hard and sincerely to turn things back around for the good. If this latter option is not taken seriously by both, then divorce becomes inevitable. This reflects a painful stage of life where hard choices have got to be made, and a stage of life where the unconditional love and support of a solid spiritual community is priceless. Sadly few spiritual communities deal in unconditional love these days.

In my experience I have known many people who have gone through the process of divorce. These people include everyone from factory workers to ministers. Rarely have I seen a person enter into divorce lightly. In most cases the need for divorce was carefully thought out and the decision to end the union was not a casual one. It was deemed a necessary action to take for the greater good of the people involved, especially the children. Sometimes good can be accomplished by standing firm and facing your difficulties, while at other times the best thing one can do is to walk away. It takes wisdom to know which path to take, not blind rules and doctrines made and enforced by unwise people.

In the end the highest law is the Law of Love, and we must ultimately do what Love would have us do, always acting for the Greater Good, which is often times more difficult than it sounds. Yet, be we speaking of reconciliation or divorce in a relationship, Love will always prevail. Each person and each couple must be free to choose their own path in life, as ultimately they are the ones who will have to live with the consequences. It is up to us as fellow sisters and brothers to support one another lovingly and un-judgmentally so that a greater good will be achieved. We all enter into difficult times. Laws, especially religious laws, should exist to make those times less difficult, not more so. ?This, as I see it, ?should be the goal of all religious and spiritual community: to always serve the good and to do no harm!

Blessings and Peace Profound,

Frater Ralph

Nematodes with pest-fighting potential identified

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Formosan subterranean termites could be in for a real headache. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists have identified species of roundworms, or "nematodes," that invade the termite brains and offer a potential bio-based approach to controlling them. Other nematodes that were identified invaded tarantula brains.

The Formosan termite, a nonnative species from Asia, feeds on cellulose from the heartwood of trees, the wood support beams of buildings, and other sources. It causes an estimated $1 billion annually in U.S. damages, repairs and control costs.

Biologically based control of the pest isn't a new concept, but the nematode species examined thus far do not kill the termites efficiently, according to Lynn Carta, a plant pathologist with the Nematology Laboratory, operated in Beltsville, Md., by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), USDA's chief intramural scientific research agency.

Since 1999, Carta has determined the identities of seven species of nematode isolated from the bodies of Formosan termites by Ashok Raina, a retired entomologist formerly with the ARS Southern Regional Research Center in New Orleans, La. Other specimens Carta has identified were collected from dead or sick termites native to Uzbekistan. Further details appear in the International Journal of Nematology.

Of particular interest to Carta and colleagues are bacteria that have a symbiotic association with the nematodes. In one case, a Poikilolaimus nematode species and bacterial "accomplice" were isolated from the heads of Formosan termites, and it's likely the microbe had sickened the insects in the field. According to Carta, the bacterial association raises an interesting prospect: using nematodes as vectors of insect pathogens rather than as primary biocontrol agents -- the traditional approach.

In another case that's still under investigation, Carta implicated a Panagrellus nematode species in the death of pet tarantulas. She suspects an insect and yeast may also be involved and is intrigued by the possibility because it would reveal a new ecological association that could yield novel approaches to pest control.

HP posts mega-loss after EDS writedown

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co swung to an $8.9 billion quarterly loss as personal computer sales shrank again and it swallowed a huge write-down linked to its $13.9 billion purchase of Electronic Data Systems Corp.

The company also on Wednesday reduced its full-year earnings outlook slightly to the low end of its previous range, responding to a faltering PC market as well as touch economic conditions in Europe and also China, where growth too is slowing. Its shares slid more than 4 percent in late trading.

The No.1 personal computer maker, which employs more than 300,000 people globally, is undergoing a multi-year restructuring aimed at focusing the sprawling corporation on enterprise services, in the mold of IBM. The plan calls for reducing its employee base by 8 percent.

HP will have gone through about half of its targeted job reductions by the end of the fiscal year, HP's Chief Financial Officer Cathie Lesjak said in an interview. It cut 4,000 jobs in fiscal third quarter and will likely have shorn 11,500 jobs by end of fiscal 2012, she said.

"HP is definitely showing progress in terms of turning around the company," said Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu. "One of the clear signs is a better predictability of earnings."

The company was plagued by poor forecasting during former Chief Executive Leo Apotheker's brief tenure.

CEO Meg Whitman has urged investors to be patient as she works to jumpstart revenue and cut costs.

"We are still in the early stage of the turnaround. There will be challenges ahead that could create some variability in performance," said Whitman, who replaced the unpopular Apotheker at the helm in September. "But I'm confident in our ability to work through them and get to where we want to be."

The world's largest PC maker posted a 5 percent slide in net revenue in its fiscal third quarter to $29.7 billion, slightly below the average Wall Street estimate of $30.1 billion as compiled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

It took a charge of $10.8 billion, mostly related to the writedown of its EDS services business, which it had announced earlier this month.

HP, which like smaller rival Dell Inc is struggling to offset faltering PC sales with services revenue, posted a net loss of $4.49 a share in its fiscal third quarter that ended July 31, versus a profit $1.9 billion, or 93 cents a share, a year earlier.

Both HP and Dell are struggling to defend their PC market share from Asian rivals such as Lenovo and Acer.

Excluding items such as the writedown, it earned $1 a share, outstripping Wall Street's target of 98 cents. The stock fell to $18.35 in after-hours trade on Wednesday, down 4.4 percent from its $19.20 close in regular trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Wall Street has so far adopted a wait-and-see approach to Whitman's restructuring plan but is concerned with the continued decline in revenue. HP has lost close to a quarter of its market value in 2012. Its shares are down about 15 percent from when Whitman was appointed to the helm in September of last year.

PERSONAL COMPUTERS HIT HARD

The massive quarterly loss was expected as the company said earlier this month that it would take a noncash charge of $8 billion, primarily writing down the value of its 2008 acquisition of EDS for $13.9 billion.

Revenue from all of HP's main business units fell, with the personal computer division unsurprisingly recording the steepest drop of 10 percent, to $8.6 billion.

Services revenue dipped just 3 percent to $8.8 billion, edging past Personal Systems Group -- which includes PCs -- to become the company's largest sales generator in the quarter that ended July 31.

HP's business continued to be hit by a slowing economy in most of its biggest regions, including Western Europe and China.

The "pretty soft underlying macro economic environment" is continuing into the current quarter, Lesjak said but added that there were some "bright spots" such as Eastern Europe and Japan.

In personal computers, HP is facing both a weak consumer market and competitive pricing, Lesjak added.

HP is also revamping its enterprise services unit, which caters to corporations. Whitman said HP is changing the leadership structure in the unit to bring more accountability and moving away from offering low-end services, an area that EDS specializes in.

In an effort to jumpstart change, the company in May appointed George Kadifa, formerly from private equity firm Silver Lake, as head of the division.

HP said it expected to earn $4.05 to $4.07 per share for fiscal year 2012. HP's previous full-year estimate was $4.05 to $4.10.

Whitman also said she plans to makes small divestitures to cull the vast product line and focus on a narrower offering.

"Behind the curtain there's lots of smaller initiatives that I think we can take those resources and get more bang for the buck by really investing behind some of our best growth opportunities," Whitman said, adding that they wouldn't be "big divestitures by any stretch of the imagination"
