U.N. Syria envoy to visit China this week

BEIJING (Reuters) - U.N.-Arab League peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi will visit China this week, the Foreign Ministry announced on Monday, as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad kept up air strikes against rebels despite a U.N.-brokered truce that now appears to be in tatters.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said that China appreciated Brahimi's mediation efforts in the Syrian crisis, but did not provide details about who he would meet on his two-day visit which begins on Tuesday.

"We have consistently expressed our appreciation and support for Special Representative Brahimi and have proactively proposed that relevant parties in Syria respond to Brahimi's proposals for a ceasefire in Syria during the Eid al-Adha holiday period," Hong said.

China and Russia have vetoed three U.N. resolutions condemning Assad's government for the violence.

But China has been keen to show it does not take sides in Syria and has urged the government there to talk to the opposition and take steps to meet demands for political change. It has said a transitional government should be formed.

China also has its own security worries.

A Chinese newspaper reported on Monday that Islamic separatists from the country's restive far western Xinjiang region are fighting alongside al Qaeda militants against the Syrian government.

Members of separatists groups have been travelling to Syria since May to "participate in their quest for jihad", the People's Daily-published Global Times tabloid said, citing an unnamed Chinese anti-terrorism official.

The official said groups including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, which China sees a militant organisation that wants to establish an independent state of East Turkestan, are aiding al Qaeda through kidnapping and gun and drug running operations in Syria.

Separatists from Xinjiang had received "terrorism training" from al Qaeda and traveled to Syria to meet with "jihadists already on the ground before forming groups on the frontlines", the official was quoted as saying.

Xinjiang is home to the Turkic-speaking Muslim Uighur people, who account for just over 40 percent of the region's 21 million population. Many Uighurs chafe at Chinese government controls on their culture and religion.

Exiled Uighur groups and human rights activists say China overstates the threat posed by militants in Xinjiang, which sits astride south and central Asia.

China has blamed violence in Xinjiang on Islamic separatists and has said that the militants based in western China also have ties to the Pakistani Taliban and other militants in northwestern Pakistani regions along the Afghan border.

Pantech Flex review

Pantech Flex review

Pantech is known for producing budget Android smartphones that punch above their weight, and the Flex is no exception. Available now on AT&T for $50 with a two-year contract, it delivers a dual-core Snapdragon S4 -- the same chip that lurks within mightier phones such as the Galaxy S III and One X -- along with a qHD display and LTE connectivity. The phone certainly hits a number of the check boxes for value seekers, but there's something that makes the Flex very different from other smartphones on the market: it has a dual personality.

Folks, prepare for memories of At Ease, Microsoft Bob and Packard Bell Navigator to come rushing back. The Pantech Flex features a unique launcher known as Easy Experience, which caters to those who might find Ice Cream Sandwich overwhelming. Fortunately, there's also a standard launcher for experts. In that regard, the Flex is deserving of its name. Unlike most handsets on the market, it's targeting both broke college students and technophobes just the same. Of course, we're here to answer a greater question: is the Pantech Flex worthy of being your next smartphone? Join us after the break for the answer.

Yoga in public schools latest test of free speech

Should yoga sessions in public schools be subject to the same restrictions as religious ceremonies? A group of 60 Southern California parents thinks so?they want to pull yoga out of their school district?s curriculum.

Yoga_Class_at_a_Gym4The yoga controversy is the latest twist on the contentious issue of anything having to do with religion in schools funded by taxpayer dollars.

In this case, a lawyer for the parents says yoga has ties to Hinduism and that there is no place for it in the Encinitas Union School District.

?There?s a deep concern that the Encinitas Union School District is using taxpayer resources to promote Ashtanga yoga and Hinduism, a religion system of beliefs and practices,? their attorney, Dean Broyles, told the North County Times, a regional newspaper.

The district has classes in nine schools and is reportedly set to receive a $500,000 grant from an Ashtanga yoga institute to expand the classes. Its superintendent has said he doesn?t plan to stop the classes.

Broyles told ABC News that Ashtanga yoga is indeed a religious practice.

?The poses and positions are acknowledged by Ashtanga and Hindi yoga as forms of worship and prayers to Hindu deities,? he told ABC. ?They have a spiritual and religious meaning behind them.?

Broyles said after doing his own research, he?s convinced Ashtanga yoga in public schools is a constitutional issue.

?We think that children are being used as guinea pigs,? he told ABC. ?It would be like a charismatic Christian organization funding classes in worship and praise.?

The yoga controversy comes after two other high-profile cases about religious expression at publicly funded schools.

In those cases in Texas and Tennessee, the debate is over Christian prayer and Christian slogans at a prominent university and a local high school.

Recent Constitution Daily Stories

Making sense out of Gallup and other presidential polls
Inside America?s first dirty presidential campaign, 1796 style
Romney?s ace could come from a mystery swing state

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, which promotes separation of church and state, is involved in both situations.

In Texas, a group of high school cheerleaders won the latest legal skirmish over their display of religious slogans on banners used at football games.

A judge has agreed with the students that the slogans were an individual expression of private free speech. That case is headed to trial next year after the students won an injunction.

Constitution Daily contributor Lyle Denniston said in his case analysis for us earlier this week that the judge?s focus was on the application of free speech principles, not religion.

?It was not decisive, for this judge, that the message is, in fact, only a Christian one. It thus is up to the cheerleaders to choose, or not, to vary the message so that it reflects religious tolerance as well as religious freedom. That is a civics lesson, even if not one required by the Constitution,? he said.

The other high-profile case involves the University of Tennessee at Knoxville football program, which has traditionally invoked a public prayer in its stadium before football games.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation said some alumni complained about the tradition, and were upset that the name of Jesus Christ was used during the prayers. It asked the school to stop the practice.

In September, another school in the state system, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, said it would use a moment of silence at games, in response to a similar complaint from the foundation.

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is continuing with non-sectarian prayers at the games.

In its dialogue with the university, Freedom From Religion Foundation cited the historic Santa Fe v. Jane Doe decision in 2000 that barred prayers at high school football games; the County of Allegheny v. American Civil Liberties Union case from 1989 (which barred nativity scenes from a courthouse); and Abington vs. Schempp from 1963 (which halted the reading of Bible passages in public schools).

The school said there was nothing wrong with a pre-kickoff invocation.

Living outside the 'Safe Little Box' ?

It?s been a busy month at the LLSC, with Light The Night walks in cities across Canada raising close to $4.5 million, and The Nike Women?s Marathon (NWM) raising over $10 million across North America in our fight for a cure. Even so, when times are hectic and tough, we tend to regress into our safe zone. ?Read on to see Coach Kaitlyn?s advise to all you runners, walkers and those of us who do neither? When life is hectic and scary, take the plunge. ?Thousands of you across North America have this past October; and we are now millions of dollars closer to finding a cure. ?Thank you all for living outside your safe little box.

One of the most common participant concerns that I hear at the beginning of every season is that they won?t be able to complete the distance. It?s too long, too scary, too far from where they are now. The training won?t work, they won?t have the time, they will get hurt or?tired and burned out.

I?ve said before that the biggest aspect of coaching is encouragement. Quite frankly, I think that most people do believe that they will be able to complete the distance (otherwise they wouldn?t have joined), but they are afraid of failure. So I encourage them and make jokes and tell them that hills are great for scoring a perky butt. Most runners don?t need me to diagnose injury (I send them physio for that anyway), they just need someone who will tell them, again and again, that they can do it.

This week was the first week of skating lessons for my daughters, 6 and 4. And by the first skating lesson, I actually mean first time in skates, on ice, ever. My older daughter is cautious. She doesn?t overly like to try new things, she has always been afraid of failure. I knew that there was the very high potential of a lot of tears on the ice last Wednesday night. Regardless of what you think of different parenting styles, we encourage her to step outside her comfort zone (like it or not), and skating lessons are really expensive, so this was happening (like it or not). Of course, I didn?t explain it to her like that: I told her that the instructors loved kids, that there were lots of kids who didn?t know how to skate, and that the most important thing was that she just try.

She fell. A lot. Of course. But man, didn?t she get back up every single time. She tried everything. She went backwards and forwards and in a circle and she hopped. And I made a complete and utter fool out of myself by waving like a maniac and practically crying with pride and happiness and love.

For a few moments, I was aware that I probably looked like a complete idiot getting so excited about a kid in a puffy snowsuit learning to skate. But that kid is my kid and she was so brave and strong and determined. So I kept waving and cheering and pretending I wasn?t crying.

Stepping outside your comfort zone is hard and scary, no matter our age.

Team In Training

Some sideline inspiration at the NWM

I watched and ran and cheered for Team in Training participants at the Nike Women?s Marathon the weekend before ? people who had been intimidated by the distance, doubtful that they would make it. And I saw a lot of them cry in pain and happiness along the route. And then I watched my girl do her best at something that she found difficult, too.

That?s really what life is all about, isn?t it? It can be so easy to get caught up in your Safe Little Box. But when you take the first step outside, whether that is one step onto the ice or your first group run, your life starts to explode in colours that you never knew existed.

It?s scary at first, but trust me, life is much more fun outside the safety net.

Google Has Given Us The Gift Of One Click Access To Docs, Sheets And Slides?Oh My!

3148687588_4d8fce3575_zI use Google products for pretty much everything, including documents, spreadsheets (ew) and slide presentations (double ew). Now that these products are safely nestled under "Google Drive", they've been renamed to Docs, Sheets and Slides. Yay for that. But what's really interesting, and something that I missed during the Apple and Facebook frenzies yesterday, is that Google has submitted these "apps" to the Chrome Web Store for easy access. Residential Restraint: Big-House Backlash This Old House ...

large house 10:22.jpgIt's the American dream, on steroids. Home ownership is seen by many as a key to stability and happiness. But as homes grow larger and more elaborate, and often replace older architectural gems, some communities are fighting back, and facing some sticky issues of property rights versus historic preservation.

This Old House details just such a battle in Chevy Chase, Maryland, where, after an influx of oversized mansions built on lots previously home to more modest and charming vintage homes, a few citizens began taking matters (and eggs) into their own hands and retaliating with vigilante justice.

This approach was, of course, not the way to resolve such a touchy conflict, and resulted in an open letter from the mayor, begging for civility. The property owners assert that they're entitled to demolish and build whatever they choose, within zoning guidelines, while other community members argue for the preservation of classic architecture and open space. After all, "houses built today are typically more than twice the size of ones built in 1950, yet lot sizes have remained the same." A huge house crammed into a historical community doesn't give anyone much breathing room.

In Chevy Chase, citizens took action through official channels and petitioned for a temporary halt on new construction, which the town council approved. But realtors, developers and property owners aren't happy and say the measure will slow growth and could affect their economy long-term.

What do you think? How much should property owners consider the needs of the community before building their dream house?

Cops: La. woman set on fire; 'KKK' smeared on car

Val Horvath Davidson / The Shreveport Times

Edna Moffitt, the mother of burn victim Sharmeka Moffitt, wipes away tears during a press conference at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, La., on Tuesday.

By Andrew Mach, NBC News

A Louisiana woman is in critical condition after she was set on fire, resulting in burns on roughly 60 percent of her body, and her car appears to have had racial slurs written on it at the time of her attack.

Sharmeka Moffitt, 20, had parked by a walking trail in Civitan Park in Winnsboro, La., on Sunday evening to go exercise, her mother told The Shreveport Times, when she was set on fire.?

Moffitt told police she couldn?t recognize the race of her attackers but she said she thought they were wearing white hoodies. Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb confirmed that the letters ?KKK? and the N-word were scrawled across the hood of her car, written in some sort of paste-like substance, reported?KSLA?in Louisiana.

Police are not yet classifying the incident as a hate crime. The Louisiana State Police, the Winnsboro Police Department, the Franklin Parish Sheriff?s Department and the FBI are all assisting in the ongoing investigation. ?

Moffitt said she was alone at the time but was able to put the fire out herself with a water spigot. When an officer arrived to the scene less than a minute later, she told police that three males had intentionally doused her with flammable liquid and set her ablaze.

She was rushed to the burn unit of the Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, La., where she was listed in critical condition, the News Star reported.

Investigators said Monday were unable to question Moffitt further because of the severity of her burns. Moffitt?s mother, Edna Moffitt, said her daughter was scheduled to have surgery Tuesday to treat the burns on her chest, back, arms and legs.

?They want to take the dead skin off and place other skin there if they can,? Edna Moffitt told The Shreveport Times.

Winnsboro Police said they will be tightening security at the park as a result of the incident.

?This is a horrific event for our community,? Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb said Monday. ?It makes everyone uneasy. It is our hope that everyone stands together at this time, and follow the information that is gathered, follow the facts, follow the evidence, and, hopefully, that will lead us to justice in this case."

Police said they have no suspects or motives in the attack but are pursuing all avenues of investigation. They are currently awaiting?the results of a scientific analysis by the Northwest Louisiana Crime Lab?of physical evidence found at the scene.

?I have no idea who did it,? Edna Moffitt told The Shreveport Times. ?I want them to pay for what they did to her.?

A candlelight vigil for Moffitt is scheduled for Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in Civitan Park.?

LinkedIn: Google, BBC, and Unilever are UK's most sought after employers

googleGoogle, the BBC and Unilever are the most sought after employers in the UK, according to LinkedIn?s new employer rankings.

The rankings, based on the billions of interactions among LinkedIn?s members, were announced today at LinkedIn?s Talent Connect event in central London, in front of more than 500 of Europe?s top employers.

Other organisations comprising the top ten InDemand employers include: Shell, BP, Microsoft, Apple, John Lewis, Burberry and HP.

LinkedIn also investigated what makes a desirable and sought-after employer in the UK. The results suggest that UK professionals are more interested in working for technology, media and retail brands ? all of which combined to dominate the top ten. Four of the UK top ten employer brands were comprised of tech giants, including Google, Microsoft, Apple and HP.

Despite the importance of the financial services industry to the UK economy, just two companies from the sector ? Goldman Sachs and Barclays ? made it into the UK top 20. Nine of the top ten most InDemand employer brands possess over 10,000 employees - only Burberry bucked the trend.

Globally, companies believe that their website (78%) and word of mouth (56%) are the most effective ways of promoting employer brand. Nearly half (46%) are already finding social professional networks highly effective for employer branding - 47% for the UK.

David Cohen, Director of LinkedIn Talent Solutions, Northern Europe, comments: ?Despite tough economic times, companies are increasingly competing for top talent, with 70% of employers ranking employer branding as one of their biggest priorities.

?The ability to better understand how your company is perceived amongst key professional audiences empowers you to take steps to better engage the professionals you most want to hire.?

WIXOM, Mich. -- Police are teaming up?to track down a suspect in 16 shootings near the Interstate 96 corridor outside of Detroit, NBC station WDIV reported.

A newly formed task force met for more than three hours behind closed doors Friday evening to pore over dozens of tips that could lead to a suspect, WDIV reported.

Shootings in the past week were reported on roads in Wixom, Commerce Township, Lyon Township, Howell and Webberville, in western Oakland County and Ingham County, WDIV reported.

In many cases, drivers reported seeing a gunman traveling toward them in the opposite direction, firing shots at their vehicle, the station reported. No one has been injured, but in a few cases bullets have come very close to drivers, WDIV said.

Some shootings occurred in daylight, others at night, WDIV reported.

Two drivers of vehicles that were struck told WDIV they had no idea what hit them.

"The shot went right through the side of my car," Aaron Mason told WDIV on Thursday, when five vehicles were hit. "Through this side of my car and right into my driver's seat,? he pointed out. ? I'm just lucky I didn't get shot," he said. "

?The parents are scared,? Raymond Bufford of Wixom told WDIV. ?Someone has to put a stop to it."

Some residents told WDIV they were avoiding Wixom Road, where most of the shootings took place. At least one shooting was on I-96.

Authorities described the suspect's vehicle as a dark sports car covered with racing stripes. The headlights are possibly tinted blue.

Twin Iraq blasts kill eight in Baghdad Shi'ite district

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Two bombs killed at least eight people and wounded 38 more in a busy market in Baghdad's Kadhimiya District on Saturday, police and hospital sources said, breaking weeks of relative calm.

The blasts hit the Iraqi capital ahead of next week's Islamic Eid al-Adha festival, a period when security officials believe al Qaeda's Iraqi affiliates and other Sunni Islamist insurgents may attempt a major attack.

Police said the bombs blew up inside a busy public market and most of the victims were women and children.

"We heard a loud explosion so we ran to see what happened ... there was big mess near the explosion scene, clothes, toes, food and bodies were everywhere," said a policeman at the scene.

"Many wounded people were shouting and looking for their relatives."

The monthly death toll from militant attacks across Iraq doubled in September to 365, the highest figure for more than two years, with most of them killed in bomb attacks, according to government figures released this month.

The insurgents have launched one major assault a month since U.S. troops withdrew in December.

Iraq was caught up in sectarian slaughter soon after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Though now far off the peak of 2006-2007, violence has remained frequent since the last American troops left as political tensions among Iraq's main Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish factions simmer.

4 Simple Ways to Get More Mileage Out of Your Press Release ...

This post?originally appeared on the?American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

Did you know that just?14%?of releases posted on major wire services have been optimized for search? Or that press releases including an image or a video get shared?three times more?than text-only releases -? and viewers spend up to?30 seconds more?time with this content -? but nearly?half of marketers?do not routinely add images to their press releases?

Many marketers are missing out on opportunities to get their news more widely viewed and shared. So before you issue your next press release, consider these four simple tactics to amplify the reach of your news.

?

1. Write Your Release With Search in Mind

?

?

It?s no longer enough to write press release copy that tells a clear and compelling story; you must now also write your release in a way that helps searchers find you online. Reporters use search engines to find sources and story ideas, and comScore?reports?that in February 2012, U.S. searchers conducted 371 million news-related searches on search engines.

Start by making a list of the keywords and phrases that are most relevant to your company, and then cross-check these terms using Google?s?keyword tool?to assess monthly search volume and competition for your core keywords, and to see suggestions for other related keywords.

Once you have your list of keywords, use them in the headline and subhead of your release, as well as throughout the body of the announcement -? just make sure that the release still sounds natural and makes sense. Avoid over-repetition by using secondary and tertiary keywords, too.

When including hyperlinks in your release, Mark Scott, Global Public Relations Manager for?NCR, also recommends you link to what your product does or your keywords, not your product name.

?I?ve seen both big and small businesses only link to their product name, which limits the SEO value of your release,? says Scott. ?Don?t put a link to just the product name because if it?s new, there?s not a single person who is going to Google that name. Link to a keyword phrase like ?inventory management software? instead, because that?s what people are searching for.?

?

2. Include Search-Optimized Images With Your Release

Including images along with your release can make a big difference in coverage. PRESSfeed?s data shows that 80% of journalists and bloggers are more likely to cover news that includes an image.

What kinds of images work? Courtney Walsh of?Media Darling PR?encourages clients to use images that really illustrate that news they?re putting out.

?For example, if it?s a new product, don?t just include a product shot, show customers using it,? says Walsh. ??Also remember that images need to be high-resolution to be useful for most press.?

Images can also work double duty in your search strategy if you optimize the images for search by naming and tagging them with keywords.

Becca Bernstein, social media marketing manager at?Picaboo, also suggests including the release headline or the related blog post title in the name and tags, so people can find your content through an image search. For example, this approach helped her company get a recent ?How to Photograph Fireworks? blog post to the top of Google?s Image Search.

?When people search for photos of fireworks, my tips and tricks for taking photos of fireworks is now prevalent,? says Bernstein.

Bernstein also recommends adding hashtags and the URL back to the blog post or news release in the Photo Title and Alternate Photo Title.

?When I do this, it allows any image pinned to Pinterest to include a searchable hashtag and a link back to my blog. This drives more clicks and ultimately, a higher ranking on Google,? adds Bernstein.

?

3. Boost Press Release Engagement With Video

?

Cited from?mashable.com

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much is a video worth??Data?from PR Newswire and?Crowd Factoryshows that while adding a photo to a press release increases engagement by 14%, adding a video along with a photo actually doubles the engagement rate.

?Based on my experience, video dramatically increases impressions, interactions and syndication of news releases,? says Jim Kemp, communications manager at software company?ColumbiaSoft. ?We frequently include video with our news releases whenever possible, and have seen headline impressions regularly increase by 130% over releases without videos.?

When creating your video, James Crawford of?Crawford PR?suggests that you stick to the news -? no self-serving advertorials ?- and avoid talking heads, to hold viewers? interest. He also recommends using graphics or charts in the video to illustrate your point, and keeping the video to under two minutes.

While you can use a service like YouTube or Vimeo to host the video, Kemp strongly recommends also distributing your video over the wire with your press release to boost syndication and SEO.

?Simply placing a link to a video is not good enough. Having the video embedded in the distribution is a must,? says Kemp.

Once your video is uploaded, make sure to tag it with your keywords, and even consider including a transcript of the video so that search engines can index the content.

?

4. Use Social Media to Amplify Your News

?

social-media-640
?

The more?backlinks?that point to your content, the more value search engines will assign to it ? so you should consider executing a mini social media ?blitz? right after your news hits the wire, says?Tom Corson-Knowles, author of?How To Make Money With Twitter.

?I?ve developed a system over the years that has been incredibly useful in boosting SEO results of press releases and other announcements for my small business clients,? says Corson-Knowles. ?Basically, it involves creating a coordinated social media promotions campaign that launches within 60 minutes of the press release or news announcement.?

Corson-Knowles recommends this process:

  • Post the news on your web site
  • Tweet the news with a link to the announcement on your web site (and have employees tweet it too)
  • Post your news with a link to the announcement on Facebook (and have employees post it too)
  • Pin any relevant news-related images or videos to Pinterest (with links back to your news page)
  • Create and post a video on YouTube talking about the announcement and linking back to the announcement on your website
  • Embed the YouTube video into a blog post and publish the blog post linking back to the announcement page
  • Post the announcement page on other social networks such as Reddit, Digg and StumbleUpon

?In my experience, the combined effect of all of this promotion as soon as the announcement is made is generally a 4x to 5x increase in traffic thanks to the improved search engine rankings of the news,? says Corson-Knowles.

Finally, write tweetable press release headlines.?Data?shows press releases that are shared via social media bring an average of six people back to the news distribution site to view the release.

When writing your headline, think about whether it?s short enough to fit into a tweet, including a Twitter handle and link. Next, be sure the company or product name is in the beginning so it won?t get cut off. Double check for keywords so the tweet is searchable, and make the headline punchy enough to generate retweets.

Stronger dollar hurts McDonald's 3Q results

(AP) ? Tough competition in the U.S. and the weakening economy abroad was a double whammy for McDonald's in the third-quarter, sending the burger chain's net income down nearly 4 percent.

McDonald's said it was adjusting some of its plans to deal with the pressures, including stepping up advertising for its dollar menu and bringing back the popular McRib sandwich nationally in December to drive traffic into U.S. stores.

The world's largest hamburger chain with 33,000 locations worldwide has thrived in boom and bust times by selling cheap eats and constantly updating its menu. But global economic pressures and intensifying competition are wearing at the company, which does two-thirds of its business overseas.

"When economic crisis began in 2008, few people thought the environment would still be as uncertain and fragile as it is today," said CEO Don Thompson in a call with analysts. "It is clear however that this operating environment is the new normal. As such our near-term focus is on stabilizing and growing traffic and market share."

Thompson said revenue in stores open at least 13 months, a key restaurant metric, is trending negative so far in October.

That news sent shares down $3.31, or 3.6 percent, to $89.55 in trading. The stock had been down 7 percent since the beginning of the year.

"McDonald's is facing a lot of pressure," said Morningstar analyst R.J. Hottovy. "They're seeing more competition from their quick-service restaurants and fast-casual peers in the U.S. and facing austerity measures and macro-economic pressures in Europe and Asia"

Oak Brook, Ill.-based McDonald's said Friday its net income fell to $1.46 billion, or $1.43 per share. That compares with net income of $1.51 billion, or $1.45 per share last year. Analysts expected net income of $1.47 per share, according to Fact Set.

The stronger dollar hurt net income by 8 cents per share. When the dollar is strong, international sales translate into fewer dollars back at home.

Revenue was nearly flat at $7.15 billion from $7.17 billion last year. Analysts expected revenue of $7.17 billion.

Revenue in stores open at least 13 months rose 1.9 percent globally, including a 1.2 percent rise in the U.S., where the company said it faced "broad competitive activity."

McDonald's is facing stiffer competition from newer chains like Panera Bread Co., which offers higher-end food in a fast casual atmosphere. Long-time rivals such as Wendy's Inc. and Burger King Worldwide Inc. are also reworking their menus, renovating restaurants and launching new ad campaigns to win back customers.

McDonald's said it will step up advertising around its dollar menu rather than its more profitable extra value menu that includes items more expensive than $1. Fast-food chains usually lose money on dollar menus, but they're used as a traffic driver in the hopes customers will spend more once they're at McDonald's. It's also bringing back the always-popular McRib sandwich in December and introducing a new item, a cheddar bacon onion sandwich that will be available in both chicken and beef varieties.

Hottovy, the Morningstar analyst, said focusing on the value menu was a good move for McDonald's: "In this environment you have to give customers what they want, and across the globe consumers are squarely focused on value."

In Europe, where McDonald's does 40 percent of its business, revenue in stores open at least 13 months rose 1.8 percent, hurt by negative guest traffic.

In Asia/Pacific, the Middle East and Africa, the measure rose 1.4 percent as the company promoted limited-time offers and traffic increased. In China, the measure rose 3.6 percent. Many U.S. companies are focusing on China for growth, but there is concern of a slowdown in the country. But Thompson said the country is a "market with significant potential," and that McDonald's is on track to open 225 to 250 restaurants there this year, with the goal of having 2000 open by the end of 2013.

Janney Capital Markets analyst Mark Kalinowski said he expects tougher comparisons with a year ago will weigh on sales trends and lowered his estimates on McDonald's for the current fiscal year as well as fiscal 2013 and 2014. He kept his "Neutral" rating on the stock.

"We would not be buyers in the context of tougher year-over-year comparisons in the U.S. to be lapped over October through May," he wrote in a client note.

Anxious Turks suspect US plot is behind Syria's implosion

In an empty coffee house in Antakya, local tradesman Ahmet Sari's face crumples in anger as he speaks about Syria.

?What's happening in Syria is all part of America's great project to reshape the borders of the Middle East. America and its allies don't care about bringing democracy to the Syrian people. Look at what happened to Iraq!? he fumes. ?The imperialist countries are only after oil and mineral resources.?

Nineteen months into Syria's conflict, resentment of Ankara and anti-US sentiment simmer in Antakya, which lies just over the border with Syria. The province is grappling with an ailing trade and tourism sector and an influx of refugees and rebel fighters. Locals blame the Turkish government for dragging them into the conflict by backing the Syrian opposition and aligning Turkey with the opposition's Western allies.

RELATED ? Think you know the Middle East? Take our geography quiz.

The current administration's "zero problems with neighbors" foreign policy, which stood strong for several years, now rings hollow as Turkey's diplomatic ties with Syria and its ally Iran sour due to Ankara's support for the rebels. And many say that all of these problems can be traced back to the US, who they are convinced got involved with, and perhaps even fomented, the Syrian unrest to loosen up regional powers' grip on oil, enlisting Turkey as a pawn in the process. It had little to do with support for democracy, they believe.

STIRRING UP THE 'BEEHIVE'

The beliefs stem in part from a bold Bush administration political proposal that has faded into obscurity in the West, but remains lodged in the minds of many here. Known as the Greater Middle East Initiative, it was formally introduced by then-US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in 2006 at a conference in Tel Aviv. Her references to "the birth pangs of a New Middle East" and the unveiling there of a new map of the region featuring a "Free Kurdistan" are still remembered with resentment.

Even with a new administration in the White House that has sought to distance itself from the previous administration's Middle East policies, many in the region are suspicious of US motives and don't believe that the various uprisings began as indigenous, people-driven movements, independent of any US involvement.

Refik Eryilmaz, a Turkish parliamentarian from Antakya with the opposition Republican People's Party, says that Western superpowers are trying to incite a sectarian conflict between Sunnis and Shiites so that countries in the region fragment along ethno-religious lines, becoming weaker in the process.

Syria is predominantly Sunni, but President Bashar al-Assad is an Alawite, a Shiite offshoot, as is most of his government.

"The access to oil will be made easier when people in these regions are divided and fighting amongst themselves. Both the US and Israel want to weaken Iran and strengthen their own position in the Middle East. But to do this, first they must weaken Syria and replace the current government with someone who supports them instead of Iran," says Mr. Eryilmaz.

This suspicion ? that outside intervention is stirring up sectarian strife in Syria ? is a view shared by many in Antakya, Turkey's most ethno-religiously diverse province.

Although Nihat Yenmis, president of the Alevi Cultural Foundation (AKAD) in Iskenderun, is convinced that sectarian violence will not seep into Turkey, he laments the plight of Syrian civilians, caught up in the cross-fire of a conflict that he interprets as planned and stoked by outside intervention.

?All ethno-religious groups have lived side by side in this region for centuries. But if someone hits a beehive from the outside, they will destroy the peace within the hive. All the bees inside the hive will fight with one another. That's exactly what the US is doing in the Middle East,? says Mr. Yenmis.

Gilbert Achcar, a professor of international relations at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, says that the Greater Middle East Initiative has long since been abandoned, and all that remains is the deep skepticism of US motives that it spurred. Those in the Middle East tend to attribute more power to the US than it actually has, he says.

?The US is overwhelmed by the situation in the Middle East and is not in control, let alone plotting something. The GMEI never took root. It just provided a grand name that fueled people's imaginations, and conspiracy theories were invented," he says.

A PENCHANT FOR CONSPIRACIES

The region's penchant for Western conspiracy theories is long-standing, beginning with the then-secret 1916 Sykes-Picot Agreement that divided up the region between the British and the French, Mr. Achcar says.

That history influenced the perception of the Bush administration's Greater Middle East Partnership Initiative, later renamed the New Middle East Project, that was drawn up in 2004 in response to potential "threats of terrorism" in the wake of 9/11. The mission was to bolster democracy and socio-economic development in the Middle East and North Africa and build a bulwark against the expansion of radical terrorist groups, such as Al Qaeda.

But the initiative stalled in the face of heightened anti-American sentiment in the wake of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. Prominent Arab figures were quick to criticize it as another US attempt to "reform" a region it did not fully understand. In an article published in pan-Arab newspaper Al-Hayat in 2004, the chief editor of the Arab Human Development Report, Nader Fergany, criticized the "arrogant" worldview of the the Bush administration which "causes it to behave as if it can decide the fate of states and peoples.?

Tasked with alleviating Arab mistrust, the US selected Turkey as a key bridge between the US and the Middle East. The ruling Justice and Development Party's promotion of "conservative democracy" appealed to the West because of its reformist stance, and to Islamic countries in the Middle East due to its emphasis on a traditional Muslim identity.

But today, Turkey's role as a bridge between the West and the Arab world on the Syrian conflict has again raised suspicions. Its alliances with the US and autocratic countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar, who have also come out as strong backers of the Syrian opposition, have provoked accusations that Turkey is more intent on weakening secular Syria and reinstating a Sunni government than in democracy.

While Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed last year on a live broadcast that the US initiative never took root, some in the Middle East still refer back to Mr. Erdogan's older statements of being GMEI's co-chairman, and remain convinced that a US-inspired scheme ? with Turkey taking the lead ? is underway.

?Perhaps the US is doing what's right for its own country and implementing a foreign policy that will protect its dominance in the world, but we have to inquisition the countries that are acting as a US pawn. Many people in Turkey think that Turkey is merely serving US interests in the region to its own detriment,? says Eryilmaz.

Back in Antakya's coffee house, with no end in sight to the Syrian conflict, local trader Ahmet Sari shows how deeply this sentiment reaches.

?So many people have died unnecessarily in Syria ? children are dying," he says, wearily. "We just want this war to stop and for there to be peace. We don't hate the American people. We just want the US administration to stop trying to spread its expansionist policies.?

Findings among the research featured at first IDWeek conference

San Diego, CA (October 18, 2012) Research being presented at IDWeek 2012 shows that a specific spectrum of ultraviolet light killed certain drug-resistant bacteria on the door handles, bedside tables and other surfaces of hospital rooms, suggesting a possible future weapon in the battle to reduce hospital-associated infections.

Researchers at Duke University Medical Center and the University of North Carolina Hospital System used short-wave ultraviolet radiation (UV-C) to nearly eliminate Acinetobacter, Clostridium difficile or vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in more than 50 patient rooms at the two medical facilities.

"We're learning more and more about how much the hospital environment contributes to the spread of these organisms," said lead researcher Deverick J. Anderson, MD, an assistant professor of medicine at Duke and co-director of the Duke Infection Control Outreach Network. Given previous findings by the University of North Carolina team that UV-C is effective at decreasing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in hospital rooms, he believes that the new study lays critical groundwork.

"We have a solid foundation to show that this approach succeeds in both experimental and real-world conditions," Anderson said. "Now it's time to see if we can demonstrate that it indeed decreases the rate of infections among patients."

His group's work is among the significant research being discussed at the inaugural IDWeek meeting, taking place through Sunday in San Diego. With the theme Advancing Science, Improving Care, IDWeek features the latest science and bench-to-bedside approaches in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and epidemiology of infectious diseases, including HIV, across the lifespan. More than 1,500 abstracts from scientists in this country and internationally will be highlighted over the conference's five days.

"Healthcare-associated infections are linked with significant morbidity and mortality," said Liise-anne Pirofski, MD, an IDWeek chair for the Infectious Diseases Society of America. "Although there are multiple sources for these infections, the hospital environment itself can play an important role. The findings of this study suggest that UV light could hold promise for eliminating bacteria from hospital rooms and reducing the risk of infection with these difficult bacterial pathogens in the healthcare environment. That would be a result to benefit us all."

UV-C, which is harmful to microorganisms, has been used for decades in food, air and water purification and to sterilize equipment in laboratory settings. This study demonstrates that its medical application may offer new strategies for reducing the estimated 1.7 million hospital-associated infections that occur annually in the United States. The cost of treating these infections, often involving increasingly antibiotic-resistant bacteria, ranges from an estimated $4.5 billion to as much as $11 billion.

In their study, the Duke and University of North Carolina researchers questioned whether UV-C could be utilized to eliminate three of the most problematic germs and improve the cleanliness of patient rooms. Given the tough economics of healthcare today, hospitals' environmental services are under pressure to turn rooms over quickly, and many surfaces can get missed by even the most diligent crews.

The study focused on general-medical and intensive-care units of the two medical centers and identified patients with infections from the targeted bacteria. Clostridium difficile, or C. diff as it is commonly known, can trigger serious intestinal conditions. Acinetobacter can cause pneumonia and serious blood, wound and urinary tract infections. VRE most frequently infects the urinary tract, bloodstream, wounds or catheter sites. Each bacterium can survive for prolonged periods on surfaces.

After the patients were discharged, the researchers obtained multiple cultures from each of five specific locations in the hospital rooms and bathrooms "high-touch" areas that included bed rails, remote controls and toilets. A special machine with eight UV bulbs mounted on a central column was then positioned strategically in each room and turned on for as long as 45 minutes to eradicate both vegetative bacteria and bacterial spores. Fifteen more cultures were taken from the same locations in every room, and the pre- and post-treatment bacteria counts were compared.

The numbers of bacterial CFUs, or colony-forming units, fell precipitously. Fifty-two CFUs of Acinetobacter were seen before irradiation, but only 1 CFU afterward down 98.1 percent. As for VRE, the proportion decrease was nearly the same 719 CFUs before and 15 after, a 97.9 percent drop.

The culturing initially was not sensitive enough to isolate C. diff, but improved techniques allowed the researchers to do further testing and the results in the UV-C treated rooms were just as dramatic.

"We would never propose that UV light be the only form of room cleaning, but in an era of increasing antibiotic resistance, it could become an important addition to hospitals' arsenal," Anderson said.
