Heights public art project attracts submissions from across Canada, U.S.

Call for proposals for a public art project planned for the corner of Hastings Street and Delta Avenue has resulted in 40 submissions from artists from across the Lower Mainland, Canada and even the U.S.

Isabel Kolic, executive director of the Heights Merchants Association, said the interest was likely due to the $30,000 honourarium that will be awarded to the winning artist as part of the project's $110,000 budget.

She said the figure was intended to elicit quality submissions from professional artists. Funding will come from the association, the Burnaby Art Gallery and planned fundraising efforts.

A nine-member committee will come up with a shortlist in coming weeks.

Dubbed the "Gateway Project," the public art piece will be no taller than two storeys and is meant to serve as a landmark to usher people into the Heights neighbourhood.

Epta Properties has granted an eight-by-24-foot easement to allow the artwork to be installed on the site of its Montage development under construction on the southern side of Hastings, between Gamma and Delta avenues. Installation of the artwork is expected in spring of 2014.
